A man was shot and killed following a pursuit Monday night at the Nevada National Security Site.

The man, whose name has not been released, drove about 8 miles past the security gate at the test site in Mercury, which is about 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

He was chased by security officers and Nye County Sheriff’s Office deputies.

When the man eventually came to a stop, police said he exited his vehicle and approached officials while holding a “cylindrical object," the newspaper reported, citing a press release.

The man “refused to adhere to verbal commands," at which point officers shot him.
