Israel and the militant Islamic Jihad group in Gaza reached a cease-fire on Thursday to end two days of heavy fighting that killed at least 34 Palestinians and paralyzed parts of Israel. It was only a few hours before the tense halt in fighting was tested by a volley of rockets fire from the Palestinian territory toward southern Israel.

Islamic Jihad spokesman Musab al-Berim said the Egyptian-brokered deal went into effect at 5:30 a.m. Al-Berim said the cease-fire was based on a list of demands presented by his group late Wednesday, including a halt to Israeli targeted killings of the group's leaders.

An Israeli military spokesman said the fighting in Gaza was "over," confirming the cease-fire Islamic Jihad announced earlier. Lt. Col. Avichay Adraee tweeted Thursday morning that the operation had ended with Israel having targeted 25 Gaza militants, most of them from Islamic Jihad.

A federal judge has ruled the U.S. government was correct when it determined a woman who joined the Islamic State group was not an American citizen despite her birth in the country.

Lawyers for the family of the woman said Friday that they plan to appeal the ruling.

“While we are disappointed with and disagree with the Court’s ruling today, this is not the end of our client’s legal options,” said Christina Jump, a lawyer with the Constitutional Law Center for Muslims in America.

Hoda Muthana was born in New Jersey in October 1994 to a diplomat from Yemen and grew up in Alabama. In 2014, she left the U.S. to join IS apparently after becoming radicalized online. While she was overseas the government determined she was not a U.S. citizen because her father was a diplomat at the time of her birth and revoked her passport.

At least two students are dead and three others injured after a classmate opened fire at a high school in Southern California Thursday morning, sheriff's officials said.

The 16-year-old male suspect was taken into custody and was last reported to be at a local hospital in "grave condition" from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.

Detectives reviewed video from the scene which showed the gunman in the quad of Saugus High School in Santa Clarita when he took a gun from his backpack, shot five people and then shot himself in the head, authorities said, noting that the shooting lasted for about 16 seconds.
