A Gloucester City man was charged Friday after he detonated an explosive device in front of a gym near his home last month and a subsequent search of his home yielded more bomb-making materials, guns and drugs, according to a statement from U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito.
Dwayne A. Vandergrift Jr., 35, was charged with malicious use of explosives, unlawful possession of two destructive devices, and unlawful possession of a short-barreled rifle, federal prosecutors said.
During the early morning hours of Aug. 26, Vandergrift Jr. placed the device, which was not described, on the door to Bellum Strength and Conditioning, ran across the street and fled the scene on a small electric powered scooter, according to a complaint. A call to the gym Friday wasn’t immediately answered.
